Cologne, Old Town, photo ASR688
You know you've reached the center of this historic city when you spot the towering cathedral (or Dom, as it's called). It’s the symbol of a cultural capital that keeps an eye on its past while forging ahead. Cologne (the Germans call is Köln) boasts a raucous gay populace that liberally imbibes Koelsch, an alcoholic brew that people swear is healthy.
The gigantic Cologne Pride celebration, Christopher Street Day, takes place each July and includes a wide array of street parties and dance events.
Getting here
Cologne-Bonn Airport is the most convenient gateway, but also consider flying into Dusseldorf and Frankfurt. InterCity and EuroCity DB trains connect you to cities in Germany and the rest of Europe.
Getting around
The downtown area is walkable, but if you’re traveling farther afield you have a network of buses, trams, and U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains at your disposal. See KVB for information.
