Independence Day July 4th Weekend dance, noon-4pm, the first among the three big summer Fire Island Pines summer parties. The 36th annual invasion of the Pines by Cherry Grove drag queens and their entourage. Parade through Pines harbor, then dance at the Sip n' Twirl in the Pines and at the Ice Palace in the Grove. Built in 1857, the lighthouse is Fire Island's oldest landmark. Immigrants sailing into New York Harbor were welcomed by this beacon of light. Fully restored, the Fire Island Lighthouse is open to the public as an observatory and museum. The lighthouse observatory offers amazing views of Long Island, the Atlantic Ocean, the Great South Bay, and Fire Island beaches, and on a clear day, truly amazing views of the New York City skyline.
One of the few remaining maritime forests on the eastern seaboard, the The Sunken Forest in Sailor’s Haven offers over 40 acres of natural habitat. It earned its name due to an illusion created by the sand dunes which makes it look to be below sea level. A hike around the forest surrounded among the twisted trees shaped by the constant salt spray is a great way to relax an unwind. Guided tours are available during the summer months.
