Charming!
By
Matt Mathrani
In what is Bucks County, nestled along the Delaware
River, New Hope is a bohemian retreat
with much to offer. Besides beautiful countryside,
restaurants here will thrill gourmets,
while wine tastings at local wineries will impress
oenophiles. Shops chock-a-block with
beautiful
crafts and antiques, quality playhouses, funky flea
markets, comfortable inns, and gay
friendly locals are also part of New Hope's allure.
The township of New Hope will celebrate a
gay pride weekend October 22-24 with
costumed trains, mule-drawn barge rides, live
entertainment, and guided historical tours.
An updated detailed roster of special events is
available at
www.gaynew
hope.com and
www.gay
buckscounty.com.
Birds of many a queer feather flock to The Raven
(385 West Bridge Street). Now under a new
management, it continues to lead as the
center of gay life in New Hope. This venue vaunts a
typical Cheer sort of bar, with steady
regulars contributing to the high liquor
sales. There's a piano bar on weekends tucked
within what is the Oak Room. Their now
renovated pool bar in the summer is a huge draw in
the summer, with glistening pectorals
adding to the allure. There's also an award winning
garden restaurant on premises serving
lunch and dinner,
often celebrity frequented. Plans are afoot for a
complete overhaul of the inn at The
Raven.
Just down the road is Cartwheel
(Route 202). Beyond the throbbing dance
floor, a quiet lounge leads onto an outdoor-deck
swarming with clientele and "topless
tooter boys," especially on weekends. The Blue Gills
Restaurant at Cartwheel offers
dining nightly.
Other attractions include a mule-towed
barge with a serenading folk singer. The
Mule Barge
(215-862-2842) drifts past cascades of flowers
along the banks of the
Delaware Canal for almost an hour of unqualified
bliss.
Odettes
(South River Road) is an upscale restaurant with a
splendid view of
the Delaware. Traditional American cuisine is
served here with a camp flamboyance.
Havana (105 South Main Street), a
tropical-style eatery, offers all-American cuisine
too, moderately
priced, right in the center of town.
Sitting on seven idyllic acres, Lexington
House (Upper York Road, 263) is an
escape from the ordinary.
The Mansion Inn (9 South Main Street), a
grand bed and breakfast in an 1865 manor,
is quite the sybaritic treat. Located near The Raven,
Cordial B&B
(143 Old York Road) and the
Wishing Well Guesthouse (144 Old York
Road) are also lodging options to consider. In
nearby historic Washington Crossing,
Inn to the Woods (150 Glenwood Drive) is
an enchanted bed and breakfast that
tantalizes one with luxury.
